Comprehending the Story of the Bible 27: Deuteronomy 4 and Matthew 5

Note* We have upgraded our recording capabilities so that everyone participating in the class can be heard and the volume should be louder as it is undergoing a post recording process.

Session 36. Wow. This was extremely fun to do together and it all happens live for shock value.

As we’ve been mining Deuteronomy 4-6 a major question I’ve had for several years suddenly made perfect sense. Is the Sermon on the Mount speaking about Israel’s election and calling based on Deuteronomy 4? Let’s find out together. If so, this changes everything.

Comprehending the Story of the Bible 26: (Parenthesis on Gentiles)

Session 26 is a kind of “processing” session in which we discuss “gentile footnotes,” the election of Israel, the glory of YHWH and how the summing up of all things in Christ is still the point of our faith. We do finally get to Deuteronomy 4, but will be there again next week.

Comprehending the Story of the Bible 25: New Covenant and Hebrews 12 Through Torah

This sessions begins with some Q&A around Hebrews 12 which is a perfect platform for approaching New Testament passages we might’ve previously thought to be presenting a view of realized eschatology. If we start with Torah, and know what is not being said by the writer of Hebrews, the reading is clean and simple.

The Q&A time springboards us into Deuteronomy 4 to show the beauty of Mt. Sinai is something we have long forgotten. YHWH’s character and identity come into zoomed focus and we behold there Jesus, and His heart for His people.

Comprehending the Story of the Bible 24: The Last Days

This is session 34 which mines the question of “Are we living in the last days?” We take a simple approach to what discipleship should be if YHWH’s story is continuing towards its climax and how we can become partakers in it. There might be a rabbit trail in here or two as well…

Comprehending the Story of the Bible 23: The New Covenant as the Fulfillment of the Old Covenants

Session 33 continues our pathway through the Covenant pillar on our diagram addressing the biblical definition of the New Covenant. We journey through hard questions, and pervasive theory surrounding the kingdom and the new covenant, and attempt to dissemble the bad things we’ve been told to believe since the evidence of what we have been told is vacant.

After answering these questions, we project forward to the fullness of the New Covenant and what the details of the Day of the Lord and the Return of Jesus could look like when fulfillment takes its course of action.

Comprehending the Story of the Bible 22: Israel and Eschatology

Session 32 begins with an audio of a Q&A time based on our discussion from last week regarding the time of the restoration of Israel, the lineage of Shem, Ham and Japeth, and the role of gentiles in the Biblical narrative.

Our second audio session works through the Covenantal Framework of the Scriptures and seeks to comprehend how the God of Israel is essentially just fulfilling what He said He would in real time and space over a period of thousands of years. This framework of covenants are simply the words YHWH spoke to His people Israel which will terminate in the restoration of the kingdom to Israel–the very kingdom the believing gentiles will be gathered into on this very earth.

Comprehending the Story of the Bible 20: Jesus as the Torah and Prophets II

Session 30

Session 30 looks at the connection of Psalm 119, the Torah, and the glory of Jesus being the Torah in the flesh. We consider Paul’s vocabulary regarding the mystery that was hidden in Torah, and why his interpretation confirms, rather than contradicts YHWH in the Old Testament. (The notes for the past three sessions are on the link below. )

Psalm 119 and Torah

For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

Comprehending the Story of the Bible 19: Jesus as the Torah and Prophets

Sessions 28 and 29

PDF SLIDES

Session 28 is a retelling of the experience I had with Jesus where I truly beheld the Word of God in the flesh.  This in turn begins to unfold and explain how the entirety of Scriptures is from Him, for Him, and through Him.

Session 29 tag-teams 28 in showing how the experience is biblically based and founds the entire point of Jesus being glorified through all the words He has spoken. We begin to bridge the gap between the Old and New Testament in showing how Paul’s definitions of counsel and administration pertain to summary statement regarding the Torah, Prophets and Writings. We are kind of on a roll now and this is getting fun.

Comprehending the Story of the Bible 18: Torah as the Instruction for Eschatology

Session 27

PDF SLIDES

Session 28 continues our parenthesis of the overarching story of the Scriptures as framed in Torah. We discuss that eschatology is not a fringe topic which cannot be understood, but rather the explicit culmination of the Torah as seen throughout many cycles in history. Addressing the complications which hinder this understanding, the teaching turns to understanding the instruction YHWH gave as a journey, rather than a set of rules and regulations. This session is a fun and exciting pondering of the true meaning of the Torah by which many will be encouraged.
